| Give the Anarchist a Cigarette book launch. October 2001 |
| A multitude of friends, acquaintances and the plain curious turned up to pack out Filthy McNasties for the launch of Give the Anarchist a Cigarette. In addition to Mick's own standing as a renowned NME writer in the 1970s the evening's loose theme of rock journalism was bolstered when Paul Gorman opened the proceedings by reading from his own book In Their Own Write.
After having been presented with a jeroboam (or whatever size it was - it was fucking huge anyway!) of champagne, Mick proceeded to the lectern to entertain the audience with tales from his memoirs that included "The Great Nitrous Oxide Heist", which concerned the liberation of a number of cyclinders of the aforementioned hallucinogenic gas from a certain hospital whilst Britain endured nightly powercuts during the dark days of the three day week in the 1970s. Mick also read another chapter called "We'll always have Paris" which related the tale of transsexual shenanigans whilst in Paris with Larry Wallis and the other Pink Fairies. Larry Wallis, himself, was also present on the evening and provided guitar accompaniment to a number of Mick's poems after he'd finished reading from the book, including "When The World Was Young", "Aztec Calendar", "Dogpoet" and "Is There a Chinaman in Town?", and maybe "On Such A Lurid Night". After that, I'm afraid, the rest of the evening was but a drunken blur, but it was worth it. This somewhat belated posting of photos from the book launch of Give the Anarchist a Cigarette back in October is now as good a time as any as it coincides with its paperback publication in July 2002.
